Big Sur is a breathtakingly beautiful, wild stretch of California coastline. Its rugged beauty and untamed charm has made it a popular destination for couples who are looking for an unforgettable place to elope. But how does one go about legally tying the knot in Big Sur? Let’s take a look at the nitty-gritty details of getting married in this magical place.

Getting Your License: Before your wedding can take place, you must obtain a marriage license from Monterey County Clerk-Recorder's Office (located at 168 West Alisal Street in Salinas). Both members of the couple must appear together at this office with valid photo identification and social security numbers for processing. The fee for a marriage license is $95; however if either member has completed 8 hours of premarital counseling from a licensed therapist or clergy member within 90 days prior to applying for a license (and has proof), then the fee will be reduced to $50. The marriage license is valid for 90 days after issuance and may be used anywhere within California during that time period.

Finding an Officiant: After obtaining your marriage license, it’s time to find an officiant who can make your nuptials official! There are many officiants throughout Big Sur who specialize in performing weddings—from traditional religious ceremonies to more unconventional ceremonies that reflect each couple’s unique personalities and beliefs. Fortunately, there are plenty of online resources available where you can find reviews and contact information for local officiants so that you can book one quickly and easily!

Understanding Public Lands:
When planning your elopement in Big Sur, it is important to understand public lands and what is allowed when using them. The vast majority of Big Sur is protected land owned by California State Parks, Los Padres National Forest, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and other agencies. These are public lands that are available for everyone to enjoy responsibly. When visiting these areas, be sure to abide by all rules and regulations set forth by each agency as well as any posted signs at the location you chose.

It is also important to practice Leave No Trace principles when visiting any public lands in order to prevent damage or disruption of the environment or wildlife. This includes packing out all trash, leaving natural objects undisturbed, staying on designated trails or roads unless otherwise specified, disposing of waste properly, being mindful of campfire restrictions (if applicable), and keeping noise levels low so as not to disturb other visitors or wildlife. Also remember that some parts of Big Sur are off-limits due to their fragile ecosystems or endangered species; it is always best to check with a ranger before exploring any areas that are unfamiliar or restricted. Finally, make sure you have obtained proper permits before holding an event on public lands - even if it's just a small ceremony with just a few witnesses present. Each agency has different regulations regarding group size limits, noise levels permitted during events, etc. so be sure to do your research!

Respectful Ways To Include Local Flora Big Sur is an incredibly diverse area with many unique plant species; there are hundreds of flowers, succulents and trees native only found here! As tempting as it may be for couples who want their photos taken among beautiful wildflowers or cacti growing along side the trail – please remember that these plants belong in their natural habitat! While some parks allow picking flowers from designated areas (check with local park rangers first!), collecting anything from non-designated areas can have serious consequences like damaging delicate ecosystems and endangering rare species. If you would like floral elements in your photos without harming local flora – try bringing faux flowers instead! There are plenty of realistic artificial flower options available online now that look exactly like the real thing – but don't require uprooting anything! Respecting Other Visitors' Experiences Big Sur is popular for its stunning views and secluded spots – but this also means lots of people coming through looking for similar experiences! When exploring state parks or national forests – please be courteous towards other visitors by giving them space if they need it; try not block any trails/roads/views; keep voices down; respect any posted signs; avoid disturbing wildlife; never feed animals; pick up after yourself (including pet waste); follow all park rules & regulations; leave no trace behind – no matter where your travels take you!
